I am Merlijn Hooijsma (1999) a Conceptual Artist from Muiderberg, the Netherlands. I studied photography at “Fotoacademie” in Amsterdam.
My vision:
I want to look at the world as I opened my eyes for the first time. Watching is for me to question things. I use my camera’s as tools to look freely at the world, I don’t take reality as fixed.
In my work I also want to free myself from the hierarchy that we are used to creating between people and their environment.A person, including myself, is not more important than an animal or a thing. We are all equal. And part of a bigger picture.
To ask the questions about the essence of things, I use light. For me light is a tool to change something. That’s what I want, to put things in a different light. Light is a means of becoming aware in this world. Light gains the power of creation, it’s new energy. What would the world be like, if a different light shined on it?
I look at the world with fresh eyes, for that I have to leave all that I know behind. If we really want to see, we must subordinate knowing to seeing. Then questions become important. What is what? Who am I? Where do I stand in the world, and how do I take part in it ? And especially: what is the world?
If we look differently, what do we see ?
